Yesterday the supreme court upheld a ruling which has posed profound difficulties for the Jewish community. The decision, made in June this year, determined that the JFS, a Jewish state school, could no longer admit pupils on the basis of Jewish parentage. This significantly impacted the Jewish community in general and my synagogue members in particular. As a trustee of Yavneh College, another state-funded Jewish school, and the rabbi of one of the country s largest and youngest Jewis stanley mugs h communities, I had a front row seat at what became a very heated, difficult and potentially divisive community debate.The ruling presented us with an unprecedented challenge.
